The 6th National Resilience Design Award

"National Resilience Design Award" is held as the place to provide information and to improve skills by assembling concrete cases and results which is helping to strengthen the national land. Structural analysis (civil engineering and construction), ground and water engineering, and disaster prevention are the target fields and various brilliant works for strengthening of national land will be introduced.

The 6th National Resilience Design Award Results Announcement

After careful consideration by juries, Grand Prix, Semi Grand Prix, and 3 Honorable Judge Award have been selected.

Development of simple measurement technology for steel structures
 - Constructing a convenient soundness monitoring system for structures using piezo limit sensors -
Akita Prefectural University Faculty of Systems Science and Technology
Program : Engineer's Studio®
The joining method of structures used in many steel structures in Japan is generally a fastening method using welding or bolts. In case of welded joint, there are few accidents due to the vibration or loosening of nuts compared to the bolt fastening, but brittleness occurs at the same time as hardening around the joints due to the thermal effect of welding. The non-destructive inspection technique and visual inspection are used for the weld joint inspection. However, in countries that have experienced major earthquakes, it is required to design buildings with the method that makes the entire building plasticized without collapsing and absorbs the earthquake energy to prevent the collapse and save human life, if a large earthquake with a seismic intensity of 6 or more based on the building design standards occurs. In other developed countries, there is currently no report of monitoring the soundness of only connecting part for a long period. In order to evaluate the soundness of steel structures after large earthquakes, there is a demand for the construction of a monitoring system that enables long-term, inexpensive, and simple measurement using an autonomous limit sensor. This report says the test result of analysis technology that enables the prediction of displacement and load from the output of the new sensor.

Flood analysis of rivers in mountain area
 - Reproducing the dynamic behavior of flood water -
 F-tech Inc.
Program : xpswmm

PDF Poster PDF (2,521KB)
Currently, local governments all over Japan are reviewing and creating flood hazard maps for each river. However the current hazard map creation guide is written for large rivers with embankment structures, and it is difficult to say that it is suitable for reproducing flooding at small rivers in mountain areas. Since the flood hazard map is created by overlapping inundation areas of each assumed collapse of dike, it displays the "maximum potential inundation depth" within the "maximum potential inundation range" and doesn't reproduce the actual flooding. As for the inundation along steep excavated river channels, the company conducted an analysis based on the reproducibility of the actual phenomenon because showing the dynamic behavior of the inundation water rather than the inundation area would be able to provide more realistic information.

Honorable Judge Award Prof. Hiromichi Yoshikawa (Chief of the judging committee)
Professor Emeritus, Tokyo City University
Validity evaluation of reaction force for bearing design by difference of analysis model
 - Verification of dead load analysis by plane grid and dynamic analysis by 3D frame -
 SHO-BOND CORPORATION Nagoya Branch
Program : Engineer's Studio®, Grid analysis
This data is the evaluation of the validity of the reaction force for bearing design on a simple steel girder bridge (with six main girders) with a bevel. The validity of the evaluation is confirmed by comparing the dead load reaction force of each girder calculated with "Grid analysis" and that calculated with "Engineer's Studio®". After the calculation, the best analysis model is selected. In addition, they performed the dynamic analysis by using the optimal model and arranged the response values acting on the bearing.

Disaster countermeasures for water supply facilities considering multi-hazards
 - Approach to streamlined design by sophistication of analysis model and verification index -
 Knowledge Fusion Co., Ltd.
Program : Engineer's Studio®, WCOMD Studio
Many areas in Japan are often hit by many disasters such as earthquake, typhoon, heavy rain, and eruption. To maintain and manage infrastructure including water and sewage facilities in the future, disaster countermeasures that take into account different types of natural disasters (hereinafter referred to as multi-hazards) are necessary. In this work, using a distribution pond of a water supply facility as an example, the company conducted a structural analysis assuming that such natural disasters occur simultaneously and proposed an evaluation method to take reasonable disaster countermeasures. Multi-hazards in this work means a flood and large earthquake.

 Dike ground analysis
 - Liquefaction judgment and deformation analysis of dyke during earthquake -
 Kyushu Civil Engineering
Program : GeoFEAS2D
This company executed the seismic analysis on levees in Kyushu. After judging the liquefaction, it estimated the stability of structures during the L2 earthquake and the amount of deformation by the static verification method, and evaluated the seismic performance. As a result, an extremely large deformation with the amount of 442 cm was generated at the top as the liquefaction.

JR Kagoshima Main Line track underlay propulsion impact analysis
-Ground deformation analysis and evaluation during propulsion pipe construction-
  JR Kyushu Consultants Company
Program : Geo Engineer's Studio
The effect of the adjacent construction was investigated along with the construction of the propulsion pipe crossing the JR Kagoshima Main Line. The analysis is divided into three steps. The step 1 is the initial stress analysis while adding the dead load. The step 2 is the analysis when applying the train live load. The analysis considering cutter excavation is the step 3. Both cases of applying the train load or not are reviewed with the stress release rate 30%. The displacement amount at the orbital position was computed and confirmed to be within the allowable range.

Nomination Award
Verification of installation method by cable erection method
 - Proposal of load loading method for each installation step -
 Namura Shipbuilding Co., Ltd.
Program : Engineer's Studio®
The cable erection method (direct suspension method) is a method which direct suspension equipment and cable crane is installed on steel towers on both sides of the construction site, and the construction members are assembled with the members are directly suspended. This method is used when it is difficult to install a construction vent in the middle due to the topography such as valley and river, and only when steel towers and anchors can be installed on both sides. This time, to use the cable erection method for the planned construction of a simple down-pass type trussed langer bridge over a wide river, the company tested if the tension on the main cable and hanger cable members would be within the planned tension and if the reaction force of the ground anchor would be within the planned reaction force.

Proposal of water tank with seismic isolation device for huge earthquakes
 - Dynamic nonlinear analysis of aquarium structure with or without seismic isolation device -
 Morimatsu Industry Co., Ltd.
Program : Engineer's Studio®
Recently, huge earthquakes have frequently occurred in Japan. However, it is economically impossible to make a water tank that can withstand all huge earthquakes. Therefore, the company got an idea that they can make tanks at reasonable cost by attaching a seismic isolation part suppressing the propagation of seismic motion to the structure as much as possible to the bottom of the tank. As the first step of design, they modeled a tank of 960m3 (16m x 10m x 6m) and placed 5 high-damping laminated rubbers for low-rise buildings on two opposite sides around the bottom of the tank and put the elastic slide bearing on the center parallel to it. They did a dynamic analysis of the nonlinear time history response by using Engineer's Studio® and compared the reaction force and the result of member verification with and without the seismic isolation device.
