"Society 5.0" Driven by Advanced ICT Including VR
Latest Trend in the Field of Automated Driving and Infrastructure Improvement
Forum8 held "FORUM8 Design Festival 2017-3Days+Eve" at Shinagawa Intercity Hall from November 14 to 17 (with 14th as Eve of the Festival held in Shinagawa Inter City Hall Foyer).
Originally several events had been held individually, which were reorganized and unified in 2009. Since then, the current form of "Design Festival" has been held for three days in autumn every year. Since 2015, a new attempt started for visitors to get familiar with our latest technologies just like attractions in the Eve.
Design Festival of this time proposes some challenges in diverse fields that FORUM8 aim to cope with in consideration of "Society 5.0" advocated by the government. Following Eve, events were held centering on the lectures and presentations that consisted "The 18th UC-win/Road Conference (VR Conference)", "The 10th International VR Symposium" and "The 11th Design Conference". Other events included the open judgement and award ceremony of "The 16th 3D-VR Simulation Contest on Cloud", "The 5th Cloud Programming World Cup (CPWC)", "Virtual Design World Cup, The 7th Student BIM & VR Design Contest on Cloud (VDWC)", "The 3rd Junior Software Seminar", and "The 4th National Resilience Design Award (NaRDA)". Also, publication of new books was announced with lectures by the authors.

The theme of Eve of this year was "Real and Virtual Game World". New games were introduced, which were realized by collaboration of CRAVA, a firm with established business record for 3DCG and game development, and VR technologies based on UC-win/Road. At the same time, music, dance, and advanced image technology were synchronized to give an exciting performance.
For the morning of Design Festival Day1, "The 18th UC-win/Road Conference" opened up with "Age of virtual reality. UC-win/Road Presentation " to explain the latest information about our VR driving simulator (DS). It was followed by "Automated Driving Conference", in which speakers from relevant ministries and agencies explained the policies on automated driving and the world trend. It continued to the first half of the afternoon part with guest greetings inserted.
The second half of the afternoon part included the award announcement and ceremony of "The 16th 3D-VR Simulation Contest on Cloud". Previously, 10 works had been nominated from the entry works. Each prize was decided for them through popular vote (November 4-12) using VR-Cloud(R) and judging committee (November 14).
After these sessions were over, two books newly published by FORUM8 Publishing were presented: "Learning Bridge Engineering through VR" and "Refuge Guidance Sign Total System RGSS Guidebook". The authors gave a speech on each book. Then the networking party started to celebrate publication as well as promote friendship.
In The first half of the morning part of Day 2, the first half of the lectures for "The 3rd State of the Art Technologies in Expression Association/ Latest Contents Sessions/ CRAVA Inc." were given as part of "The 18th UC-win/Road Conference". In the second half, final presentation by the entry teams for "The 5th CPWC" (8 works nominated previously from the entry works) and "The 7th VDWC" (11 works similarly) and the final open judgment for them were conducted.
The first half of the afternoon part was "The 10th International VR Symposium". Following the special lecture, members of "World 16" (9 members were present) made presentation about the research results of the summer workshop held in July 2017 at MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) in Boston, USA and so on.
In the second half of the afternoon part, second half of the lectures for "The 3rd State of the Art Technologies in Expression Association/ Latest Contents Sessions/ CRAVA Inc." were given, followed by the award announcement and ceremony for "The 5th CPWC" and "The 7th VDWC". Next, the award ceremony for "The 3rd Junior Software Seminar" was held, followed by the networking party.
On the last day of Design Festival (Day3), "IM&VR i-Construction Session" of "The 11th Design Conference" was held from the morning part to the first half of the afternoon part. In the second half of the afternoon part, the award announcement and ceremony for "The 4th NaRDA" (for 8 works nominated previously from the entry works, judges made final judgement on Nov. 14) was held. Presentations were made by the prize winners to close the ceremony. During the conference period, on the other hand, explanation was given on the TV program provided by FORUM8, "pakkun, Mayuko Kawakita, Ikezawa ayaka VR friends 2" (TOKYO-MX), along with the display explanation in the foyer. The contents of respective events and sessions are described below.
