SIGGRAPH is called the largest and best CG festival in the world. After
exhibiting at SIGGRAPH in San Diego for the first time, FORUM8 has ran
a booth actively in Asian countries such as Singapore, Yokohama, Shenzhen
(China), Kobe (as Platinum sponsor), Macau, Bangkok, and Tokyo (as Platinum
sponsor, 2018) in addition to in Vancouver, Canada in 2014. The event this
year was held in Los Angeles, USA under the theme "THRIVE TOGETHER".
Exhibitors were required to display the possibilities of computer graphics,
animation, VR, game, and promotion technologies, and FORUM8 ran a booth
under the theme "VR design, modeling and simulation platform for the
next generation digital cities".
Display of game engines stood out
At SIGGRAPH Asia2018 we exhibited last year, a lot of HMD contents
and VR systems using motion tracker were displayed. This year,
experience-type booth with contents of game engine such as Unreal
Engine and Unity attracted visitors. Many people were at the booth
where the Unreal Engine was used to display the destruction
expressions including division/cutting of 3D models in the robot
battle game. At the booth, the visitors could try to destroy cities with guns
by using HTC Vive controller. As an exhibitor displaying the Unity, the
company that exhibited the HMD + motion seat system was popular. In addition,
many hardware manufacturers such as NVIDIA, Dell, and ASUS displayed their
newest high-spec PCs suitable for VR system and attracted the visitors.
VR case studies getting attention from video creation and game field
At the FORUM8 booth, focusing on UC-win/Road Ver.13.1, we showed
demonstrations of new functions of the comprehensive 3D contents
creation software Shade3D and the native file cooperation between
Shade3D and UC-win/Road, and VR-NEXT corresponding to the material
reflection and high-accurate expressions based on PBR (Physics Base
Rendering). Many visitors tried the thriling ride of VR Motion Seat
reproducing a large roller coaster running in 3D data created by
scanning around Shinagawa Station where the FORUM8 HQ is located.
Also we had the visitors drive the scenarios of driving simulator
reproducing situations of weather change, busy traffic, hazardous
cutting in, etc. in Boston city.
About 1,000 people came to the FORUM8 booth during the whole event period.
We were asked what game engine we are using to create VR data in UC-win/Road,
and we also got requests, for example, "we want to import and utilize
3D VR contents and 3D models in UC-win/Road" and "we want to
build a VR training system for movie stant staff". We felt that people
in a variety of industries highly evaluated the high-precise VR depiction and
cooperation with hardware.
Interest in technology related to autonomous driving and technology of
AI/image recognition
FORUM8 also introduced ADAS-related simulation technology, examples of
visualization of big data analysis result, and case studies of customization
to utilize sensing data in VR space as the development environment of AI
/ deep learning function. For example, we suggested some useful VR usages
such as the detection of surrounding objects and line data by simulating
sensor function, the sorting of segmentation scene analysis, and the display
of depth information. Technologies related to the autonomous driving gained a
lot of attraction. We got many inquiries for example as a tool to
construct the vehicle test environment and to study the advanced
vehicle technology development, based on the modeling function,
traffic flow creation, and operability of UC-win/Road. In addition, as an applied case of image
recognition, we introduced AR technology that can display 3D CG by using
the image recognition function (markerless) with the cooperation of Premium
Arts inc., and we suggested the development to VR linkage and CV (Computer
Vision).
In specific, users can change vehicle body colors and layout of
chassis and engine on screen by overlaying the vehicle model in
tablet and smartphone on the real vehicle frame with the AR image
recognition system. This AR
system will be utilized widely in several industries including the development
of vehicle. We also displayed the Premium Art's AR system that can project
the AR virtual announcer on tablet and smartphone, which gained attraction
from visitors highly interested in animation, game, and CG.
FORUM8 will continue to improve software functions and system cooperation to
provide cutting edge solutions that can be used by not only users in automobile
industry but customers in various industries.
