The US Institute of Transport Engineers 2016 Annual Meeting & Exhibition took place this year in Anaheim California. The focus of this year’s meeting was how to embrace the rapid changes that are occurring within the transportation industry.
One of the many notable presentations was sponsored by WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff and titled: Ready or Not…Self-Driving Vehicles Coming to a City near You
The presentation focused on the fact that a transportation revolution bringing autonomous vehicles to the market has started. By 2035 it was suggested that we may find the majority of driving is done by machine not man. The panel discussion covered a wide range of arguments based on whether or not this is / was a good idea or not. The consensus was that whether we agreed or not, autonomous driven vehicles are a reality. One serious question was what type of vehicles would be autonomous? This question was discussed at length with a consensus agreement that autonomous taxies in specific urban locations was a distinct possibility – as is currently been trialled Singapore apparently.
