"100 Best Bridges" Will Be Starting from Next
Issue |

            A new
series of column "100 Best Bridges" will be starting from the next issue ("Up
& Coming" dated May 1st, 2009).

While there is a severe discussion
on public works projects, social infrastructures play an important part in
development of economy in our country, or in improving convenience and comfort
of people's life. Especially for bridges, a large amount of stock has been
accumulated from the postwar rehabilitation period through the rapid growth era;
in addition, it is an urgent task to deal with maintenance and renewal of the
bridges under aging and obsolescence. Since there are many bridges with
excellent design, we focus on the cases that people have loved and been treating
with care through civic life and present them in a series, including their
design elements.

This will be based on the effort of selecting 100 best
bridges by regions through applications open to the public conducted by the
branches of Kanto, Chubu, and Kinki areas of NPO IT Station "Citizens and
Construction." Members of these branches will pick up most characteristic ones
from each "100 Best Bridges," telling stories about their overviews and
features, their regional and cultural value, relations with civic life, and so
on, illustrated with photos.

Civil Forum: The First Civil Forum Under Collaboration of Five NPOs in
      Different Fields of Construction
NPOs Including Those Supported by FORUM8 Made an Appeal to Public on The
      Role of Construction Engineers

      On February
5th, Civil Forum was held entitled "The roles of NPOs and groups of engineers in
the fields of construction --- aiming at social contribution, self-realization
of construction engineers, and activation of NPOs" sponsored by five NPOs
(non-profit organizations) in relation with civil engineering and construction
at the lecture hall of Japanese Society of Civil Engineers (Yotsuya,
Tokyo).

"This is not only a part of promotion of cooperation among NPOs,
but also the 5th Forum to commemorate the 5th anniversary of the forum series of
'Land planning and town planning based on public involvement' held annually by
our NPO," says Mr. Yoshihisa Hanamura, Chief Director of NPO IT Station
"Citizens and Construction" (Citizens and Construction), clarifying the position
of this forum.

Citizens and Construction initiated its activities as an
NPO in November 2003. Its goals are to promote public involvement in public
works projects, and thus contribute to creation of environment comfortable to
live in and planning lands and towns that are rich and safe. To achieve these
goals, Citizens and Construction pursues a mission to bridge citizens and
governments with regard to land planning and town planning, providing related
information to the public. It also collaborates with civil activities aiming at
utilization of public facilities and structures with emphasis on environment and
disaster prevention. In addition, it is also planning to support utilization of
IT (information technology) that is a key to having communication among the
parties involved, as well as to encourage computerization of national land and
utilization of IT in the construction industry. Through these activities, it has
held different forums and seminars.

      Citizens and Construction reconfirmed
its initial visions at the opportunity of 5th year of establishment as a
corporation (6th year of establishment). Then it drew up a scheme of energizing
its activities more in order to fulfill its social responsibility along with
networking NOPs for civil engineering and working to solve common problems in
cooperation. In August 2008, "Civil NPO Liaison Conference" (tentative name) was
established, consisting of five NPOs including Citizens and Construction,
Onkososhin-no-kai, Engineers Without Borders, Hashimori (Bridge Keeper) Support
Center, and Hito to Michi Kenkyukai (Society for the research of people and
roads). Through examining various issues, they came to plan Civil Forum aiming
at appealing to the society concerning such efforts and ideas.

From an Institute of Technology to a University:
Musashi Institute of Technology To Be Renamed As TOKYO CITY UNIVERSITY in April
2009
--To Place Weight on the Research Ahead by Effectively Using the Tool
Functions, Practicing Unique Design Exercises with Various Software
Packages

Having the 80th anniversary this year, Musashi Institute of
Technology will be renamed as "Tokyo City University" in April when the new
semester begins. This issue introduces Dept. of Urban and Civil Engineering,
Faculty of Engineering, which covers the field of civil engineering, one of the
main pillars of the Institute since its foundation. Special focus will be placed
on the efforts of efficiently advancing the essential research by effectively
utilizing useful software programs in the course of "Disaster Prevention
Engineering" in the Dept, where research is made on improvement of the safety of
structures forming urban infrastructure and on disaster mitigation throughout
the urban system.

"Dr. Yoshikawa's Lab for Structural Safety" of the
course verifies historical disaster cases, covering social infrastructure
directly linked with public life including bridges, based on the urban
environment in our country, which is subject to be exposed at the threat of
various types of natural disasters. The Lab operates classes and research on
disaster prevention technologies to mitigate damages caused by such
disasters.

Aiming to use functions of superb software programs actively
in these processes, the Lab has so far introduced FORUM8 products including
"UC-win/FRAME(3D)," which is a 3-D analysis program for space-framed structures,
"UC-win/Section," which is a section calculation program that considers biaxial
bending for optional shapes of reinforced concrete and steel framed reinforced
concrete, "Pier design" for earthquake-resistant design, reinforcement
calculation, and preparing drawings based on the seismic coefficient method and
the ultimate lateral strength method during earthquakes, "RC substructure design
calculation" for design calculation of substructures and RC structures including
Rahmen type piers and abutments, and "Mobile UC-1," which is a mobile tool for
civil engineering calculation. While devising approaches to innovative design
exercises using these programs, the Lab has developed software packages as well
as provided open seminars in cooperation with FORUM8. Other Faculties and
Departments have also adopted "UC-win/Road," which is a 3-D real-time VR
(virtual reality) software product, and "Multiframe," a 3-D structural analysis
software product.

We interviewed Dr. Hiromichi Yoshikawa, Professor (Dr.
Yoshikawa's Lab for Structural Safety: belonging to the Earthquake Risk
Management Laboratory, Advanced Research Laboratories since October, 2008),
Visiting Researcher Aoto Hiroki, and Dr. Tetsuhiko Kurihara, Associate Professor
(Dr. Kurihara's Lab for Structural Safety), and others.

UC-win/FRAME(3D) is a three dimensional analysis program. It is applied to
optional shape space-framed structures. It can perform linear and nonlinear
analysis by static and dynamic load. It can also treat geometric nonlinearity.
It can collectively perform stress resultant calculation, stress and strength
verification by highway bridge specification, and limit state design calculation
by Japan Society of Civil Engineers concrete standard specification. Thus it
attains both advanced structural analysis and member design function. Its three
dimensional model can be exported to 3DS file, and can be used by such programs
as UC-win/Road.

                  Product
Background
In recent years, the transition to "performance design" has
progressed, and the rationalization of design is gaining more and more momentum.
In March 2002 Highway Bridge Specification V Seismic Design Volume, dynamic
verification with wide application range is recommended. Forum8 has been
providing this product since November 2002. This product is based on optional
shape space-framed analysis function. We have been striving for enrichment of
three dimensional nonlinear analysis function using fiber element, live load
loading function based on influence lines analysis, and design and verification
function by highway bridge specification and Japan Society of Civil Engineers
concrete standard specification. It is possible not only to dynamically verify
bridges with metal bridge piers, reinforced concrete bridge piers, rigid frame
piers, and concrete superstructure etc. based on Highway Bridge Specification V,
but also to analyze and member design all the frame structures consisting of
steel or concrete. |

            Message from
developer
We promise that we will continue to
focus on Civil engineering filed. We believe that we always have to check that
the analysis methods being generally used are whether sufficient or not. It is
necessary to improve the quality of analysis by new technique. We expect that
our strategy will be good enough so that it can help to build the safety
infrastructures and give the wonderful business opportunities. Engineer's Studio
is going to release on 27 February 2009. This release can be a big step for our
strategy.

            UC-win/FRAME(3D)
has been innovated a fibre element. It can be a good chance to compare between
ordinary computation method and fibre element. Adding the checking function to
design, UC-win/FRAME(3D) has been upgraded to use for daily design and
analysis.

Engineer's Studio has "Maekawa concrete model" in the middling
plate. We have understood that Prof Maekawa's major study is spirit of
innovation, so we decided to implement "two dimensional concrete" to our
software called UC-win/FRAME(3D) as a solver.

            Someone may wonder why
we understand "Maekawa model" by ourselves and innovate it into the solver. Why
didn't we use the solver was based on the existing research and develop only an
interface? We have already known the needs that our users want for analysis
tool. Hence we understood "Maekawa model" by ourselves and mount it to
UC-win/FRAME(3D)'s solver so that we could provide the full integrated solver
and a latest interface to users. In the result, users can access all analysis
functions which we provide by using a product.

We developed the solver based on our discussion with Prof Maekawa. We have
realized how proper his advice was and do appreciate it.

            The graphical engine of Engineer's
Studio has been design as the function such as 3D CAD from the beginning. Thus
we could achieve to provide new functions and to refine its performance than
UC-win/FRAME(3D). We expect that Engineer's Studio will be a strong tool on your
daily work.

We will strongly focus on developing Engineer's Studio
and add various kinds of functions. Engineer's Studio has been designed as
several different options. We are planning to add new option in the future.

For us, the release of Engineer's Studio means that regarding the grade
average of software and the analysis ability, the new age starts. We look
forward to that all of our users can be given grater chances of analysis by
using Engineer's Studio and it can be used for new construction
type.

      UC-win/Road Micro Simulation
Player
      Micro Simulation Player is the
function to run various type of simulation animation which is depicted as 3D
models' movement.
This function's aim is that to implement a major plug-in to run the simulation
result from other application and to define the XML format used to save
the result then to release to our user. Thus our users can customize their
simulation result to depict by UC-win/Road. Using this function, it
enables to do all kind of micro simulation such as vehicle and railway and look
after plan management, transfer objects at a factory, control heavy machinery in
civil engineering filed, easily link with other applications and UC-win/Road. At
the same time, the SDK (Software
Development Kit) will be extended so that it is available to link with
simulator and simulation software in real time.

            1) 3D animation
function:
3D model's animation based on released xml format. It is
available to create various type of 3D model's animation based on the
information of model's location.
It enables to run several data at the same
time.
            2) Snap function for vehicle and pedestrians:
            It is capable
to locate objects such as vehicle and pedestrian on the road and the lane, the
pedestrian, the ground.
            3) The control for the existing objects:
            It
is available to control static objects such as traffic light.
            4) The
control for drawing objects:
Time, weather, light and so on.
            5) The
drawing effect control for the objects:
            Move command, state of traffic
light, transparent, MD3 character animation.
            6) The optimal integration
with the functions of UC-win/Road:

      The detail of function
      File
format
      The XML format saving an
animation data can move 3D model and define it in all scene.
      This file
doesn't have 3D mesh of the models, however it keep a link to the 3D model which
is connected.
      Model instance
"Model instance" has the information of "TYPE" so that it can be
linked to model's profile. Moreover, "instance" has the static list which is
defined by the time so that it can set the location and the direction,
animation, state of display for each condition. Two type of "model instance" are
available; temporary "Temporary instance" and "scene instance". "Temporary
instance" can be created in real time during running simulation, however, it
can't be saved as UC-win/Road project. The 3D model's profile was selected when
it was created can be used. When the profile hasn't been admeasured, "Instance"
won't be created. "Scene instance" can be created as same as "Temporary
instance", however it will be saved as the project. This instance can be
allocated as the part of scenery to the existing model of a current UC-win/Road
project. Traffic light is pointed to as an example of "Scene instance". During
running simulation, the "instance" created by UC-win/Road is controlled by xml
data.

      UC-win/Road Ecological Drive
Plug-in

            Introduction
The Ecological drive plug-in of UC-win/Road is new plug-in which
calculates fuel consumption and carbon footprint of driving and make a graph
using driving log of UC-win/Road.

Evaluation Formula of Carbon Footprint *1
Generally, carbon footprint based on vehicle
running has been know to be in proportion to fuel consumption so that it is
clear to be able to quantify adequately by three factors such as "travelling
time T" and "travel distance D", "Feature of fluctuant vehicle speed". Eco
driving plug-in calculates fuel consumption and carbon footprint using a formula
(1) based on a result of driving log.

E: Discharge amount of CO2 for travel time (kg-C)
            T:

            D: Travel distance (m)
K The number of speed measurement

            Kc: Emission factor CO2 0.00231

            * 1 T.Oguchi,
M.Ktakura and M.Taniguchi" Carbondioxide emission model in actual urban road
vehicular traffic conditions", Journal of Infrastructure Planning and Management
(JSCE), No.695/IV-54, pp.125-136

            Major Feature
It has "Ecology drive log output star" and "Save
Ecology drive log as", "Calculate carbon footprint" as UC-win/Road tool's menu
and is available to output a driving log or to calculate carbon footprint by
selecting any one from these tools. It can change each parameter in the
evaluation formula of carbon footprint as well. It saves the ecological drive
log as data file so that we can re-create the calculated result later.

            In
the result of "Calculate carbon footprint", the values such as Travel time (T)
and Travel distance (D), fuel consumption (Q), carbon footprint are displayed. A
number of graphs are available in the graph create function, for instance,
acceleration and speed, fuel consumption per time, cumulative fuel consumption,
carbon footprint per hour, cumulative carbon footprint. Moreover, we can output
a result as CSV file and use it with Microsoft Excel.

            Validation Example
We had an experiment that we
drove around ordinary city in UC-win/Road and studied a relationship between
driving condition and carbon footprint to research the relationship between
"sudden starting/sudden stop" and carbon footprint. Major conditions are
follows; (1) Drive a course which distance is 1km, (2) Must stop at a cross
section, (3) No limited speed, (4) Try several different type of driving from
gentle drive to rough drive. Then we got the following result.

            Conclusion:
            When
we repeat to start driving and stop suddenly, the result of both fuel
consumption and carbon footprint are tend to increase. On the other hand, when
we try to drive gently, the results of both fuel consumption and carbon
footprint are tend to decrease. Thus we expect to decrease carbon footprint when
we drive gently.

      Engineer's Studio Analysis Support
Service
As you know that we provide the analysis support service by UC-win/FRAME(3D), once we release the Engineer's Studio,
we start providing an analysis support service by Engineer's Studio as
well.

A process of this support service is the same as UC-win/FRAME(3D)'s
support service.

We will introduce a case study by
Engineer's Studio. For convenience of page space,
      we will skip a further
detail.

      1. Analysis using
flat plate element
Using flat plate element, it is available to analyze a construction having
walls as member of a structure.
And we use "reinforced concrete nonlinear constitutive law (Smeared crack model)" which was developed
by concrete lab at Tokyo University and well known in the world as flat
plate element. Our flat plate element can
extend reinforced concrete of UC-win/WCOMD to thickness direction and analyse
      not only internal deformation
but also external deformation of nonlinear behaviour as well.

Figure 2 shows a result of displacement loading horizontal direction for
      a under ground wall construction.
It is modeled by elasticity flat plate element. It visualizes an internal
aspect without displaying a front wall.
Figure 3 shows a result of displacement loading horizontal force in an
oblique direction. Top surface is transmitted.
It is available to see a model either from top or side in Engineer's Studio.

      2. Analysis using fibre element
An analysis using fibre element as a nonlinear analysis of beam element
is available as well as .
It is capable to analyze for constructions which axial force changing
or two axial spring is happened
such as nonlinear of steel bridge and so on.
For convenience of page space, we only introduce case example,
